Wisdom Teeth: Clinical Review, Removal Risk–Benefit Analysis, Timing of Removal, Pain Management and Dry Socket

Saturday, April 101:00pm – 2:30pm

This course provides an evidence-based overview of third molar management. Participants will learn to identify clinical indications and contraindications for removal, evaluate the risks and benefits of prophylactic versus symptomatic extraction, and determine optimal timing based on patient age, root development, and potential complications. The course also reviews pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic pain management strategies and applies decision-making principles to recognize cases that warrant higher levels of care.

Learning Objectives

* Assess third-molar development and optimal timing for intervention based on age, root formation, surgical difficulty, and overall patient risk.

* Identify key anatomic and clinical risk factors affecting third-molar treatment and referral decisions, including inferior alveolar nerve and sinus considerations.

* Recognize common third-molar-related pathology and complications, including pericoronitis, caries, periodontal defects, infection, and dry socket.

* Apply evidence-based strategies for preventing and managing common postoperative complications, including conservative management and appropriate referral when indicated.

* Communicate effectively with patients and parents regarding treatment timing, anesthesia options, recovery expectations, surgical risks, and the potential consequences of non-treatment.
